Last week Pantone announced its 2024 Color of The Year: Peach Fuzz. A vintage, ethereal hue that aims to bring comfort and calm. It has been described by Pantone as “velvety”, “gentle” and “nurturing” and we can see why this cosy shade has become the pick for 2024.

The Pantone colour of the year is carefully selected by a team of colour experts who extensively research current influences from the film industry, fashion, digital design, art, travel destinations and more. Colour psychology is also studied and forecasting tools used to predict upcoming trends and influences. With all of this information collated, the options are narrowed down to just one colour that sets the tone for the year ahead.

In recent years, Pantone have selected vibrant colours - with Viva Magenta 18-1750 being the pick for 2023 and Very Peri 17-3938 for 2022. Both very daring, vibrant colours… so why is the 2024 Peach Fuzz such a contrast from previous years?
Peach Fuzz is less bold than last year’s choice, a bright, pink-red shade called “Viva Magenta.” But the world felt different in 2023, when Pantone “celebrated coming out of the malaise of the last year,” as Eiseman tells CNN’s Leah Dolan. Viva Magenta was intended to evoke verve, power and grace as the world emerged from the pandemic and continued to grapple with social unrest, as NPR’s Rachel Treisman wrote last year.
Heading into 2024, however, Peach Fuzz “arrives at a dark time amid a tumultuous war and a tense election year,” as Angelica Villa writes for ARTnews. The more muted hue is meant to reflect the “need for some quiet, some peace, some respite,” Eiseman tells CNN. Sarah Kuta - SmartNews
Peach fuzz is an unexpected pick, however with the return of nostalgic colour trends from the 70s and 80s in recent years, we can see why this popular 80’s shade has made its comeback. As said by Eiseman in the above extract, the concerning issues the world is currently facing has sparked the need for comfort and nostalgia.
